About the Battenkill Country Club

The Capital Region’s Finest 9-Hole Golf Course

Founded in 1925, the Battenkill Country Club is a public 9-hole golf course set beside the Battenkill River in Greenwich, N.Y. We are conveniently located to historic Saratoga Springs, Albany, and Glens Falls in New York’s Capital Region. Our par 35 course features rolling greens, well-maintained fairways, and challenging hole layouts over nearly 3,000 yards. We offer front 9 and back 9 tees (men, women, and senior) and we are open to the public every day, with no tee times required.

Our clubhouse offers a locker room, pro shop, bar, and full kitchen. We can host your special golf event or tournament, including fundraisers, memorials, and corporate events. Lunches, snacks, dinners, and beverages are available for all outings and tournaments.

The way the course is designed, more than half of the course is right on the banks of the Battenkill River. You can see it on the first green, the second and third holes, the fifth hole and the sixth tee.

Our address is 593 Route 29, PO Box 127, Greenwich, NY 12834.  Please feel free to call us at 518-692-9179.

Write-up by a Battenkill member-

Since 1925, the Battenkill Country Club has welcomed golfers to Greenwich, NY. Set next to the historic Battenkill River, the golf course offers a relaxing and picturesque challenge over 9 holes. The member-owned par 35 golf course features nicely rolling greens and well-maintained fairways with just over 3,000 yards of length. There are six sets of tees, including front 9 and back 9 tees for men, women, and seniors, allowing for 18-hole play (par 70). The golf course is open to the public 7 days a week, with no tee times.

Much of the golf course offers scenic views of the Battenkill River. The river can be seen on the first green, the second and third holes, the fifth hole and the sixth tee. Woods run along the right side of the majority of the holes, and a stream comes into play on holes 2, 6, and 9. The course consists of 3 par 3s, 4 par 4s, and 2 par 5s.

The clubhouse offers a locker room, bar, full kitchen, and pro shop offering Battenkill logo merchandise as well as golf balls and equipment. The Battenkill hosts many tournaments throughout the year, including fundraisers, memorials, and corporate events, with many of these events including lunch and dinner.

The newly refinished bar in the clubhouse offers a variety of beer on tap as well as cooler drinks and a fully stocked selection of mixed drinks. The kitchen includes selections such as burgers and hot dogs with fries, chicken tenders, and BLTs. Plenty of seating is available to enjoy your food or drinks, whether it is at the bar, at the brand-new high-top tables next to the bar, on the screened in patio overlooking the golf course, or outside where you can sit on Adirondack chairs or by the fire pit.

The Battenkill Country Club offers a family friendly and relaxed atmosphere. There is a perfect balance of competition and great course conditions, combined with offering a laid-back round of golf for those less experienced golfers. The golf course is unique in that there are no tee times, and golfers can arrive at their convenience and head to the tee after checking in. There is a practice putting green for golfers to work on their chipping and putting skills, and a warm up net to get lose before hitting the course. The golf course has been home to the Greenwich and Hoosic Valley high school golf teams for many years, and you may spot some high school matches being played in the fall months.

Friendly competition is easy to find at the Battenkill, with leagues offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the summer and a big skins competition that has been held by a dedicated crew every Sunday morning throughout the season for years. The tournament schedule includes many tournaments for members and for non-members. Some members consider there to be four “majors” on the schedule. These include the Spring Handicap, a bracket style tournament where members go head-to-head in matches throughout the spring and summer, the 3-day Club Championship, where 35 members competed in the men’s and ladies divisions last year, the Member Guest, which for many is the highlight of the season and features 3 days of action-packed golf, and the Morrisey Cup, the late summer bracket tournament. Other annual highlights include the Senior Club Championship, Junior Championship, and the Member Member tournament. The Battenkill also holds Ryder Cup competitions, where members compete in 2 teams against one another or go head-to-head with nearby Kingsbury National Golf Club.

The Battenkill even has their own version of the PGA tour’s season long points race, called the “Donnelly Cup”, where the season-long winner earns a free cart membership for the following season. There are several scrambles open to non-members as well, including the annual Obie Brundage Memorial scramble, named after the club’s first superintendent who held the position for 47 years.

There is a rich history at the Battenkill and many of these events date back to the earliest days of the course. This year marked the 64th annual Spring Handicap tournament, and when visiting the clubhouse, you will find plaques listing the winners of these traditional tournaments dating back to 1958. You will also find photos of the 16 Battenkill Hall of Fame members. Hall of Fame inductions occur during certain years after the annual Hall of Fame tournament, where local golf professionals play the course and are joined by a 4-person scramble team.

For many years, the Battenkill has had a strong group of volunteers, referred to as the “Battenkill Beavers”, who tackle projects on the golf course. In the clubhouse you will find a framed photo of the original “Battenkill Beavers” from 1983. A saying that you will often hear amongst these volunteers is that “it takes a club”.

There are currently over 200 members at the Battenkill. Memberships are priced at $275 for juniors (22 and under), $500 for young executives (age 23-30), $750 for singles, $1,150 for couples, and $1,250 for family memberships.
